about me

I am an artist, athlete and lawyer, though not always in that order. I discovered sport before coming to the realization that creating and living art were necessary parts of my life. Figure skating was the first of many sports I tried and through which I tested myself. The fast sports came next - downhill ski racing and then the sport that ultimately shaped much of who I am today - luge. It was after the Olympics in 1980 that I first got on a sled and sped down the track in Lake Placid. I won the Junior Olympics race at the end of the two-week training camp I participated in, was invited back for a summer camp and was hooked. I spent much of the next 18 years on a luge sled or training to be (fast) on a luge sled. I had the good fortune of competing on four U.S. Olympic Teams - 1998 Nagano, Japan; 1994 Lillehammer, Norway; 1992 Albertville, France; and 1988 Calgary, Canada. I won seven U.S. National titles along the way and loved the challenge of it all. One of the most memorable moments in my sports career was carrying the American flag at the head of the U.S. Team into the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway in 1994. Between the Olympics in Calgary and Nagano, I finished my undergrad studies at Dartmouth (on a slightly extended plan, but Hanover was a good place to be an athlete/student). I was a geography major and spent much of my time studying why things were where they were, but discovered the studio art department the summer after the Lillehammer Olympics. From the moment I set foot in the drawing studios, I knew that I had found a piece of what makes me who I am. I fell in love with the smell, feel, process and magic of painting and came to photography a little later. In 1998, I traded my luge sled for lots of books at Boston College Law School. Since graduating in 2001, I have been practicing law (mostly intellectual property litigation) in New York City. For a short while I converted half of my living room to a painting studio, but decided that I actually liked to have a place to sit that didn’t smell of oil paint. One morning when walking on the beach in Santa Monica, I captured some images on film that turned out to be my paintings in a different medium. That was the beginning of what you see on this website.
